__Arquitecto de la Universidad Católica de Chile, 1992. Trabaja de manera independiente desde 1994. Realizó estudios de postgrado en teoría e historia en el Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia. Fue Visiting Professor en la Universidad de Harvard entre el 2000 y el 2005. Profesor de la Universidad Católica desde 1994, desde el año 2006 es el titular de la Cátedra Elemental de la UC y Director Ejecutivo de ELEMENTAL.
Es autor de varios libros, entre ellos Los hechos de la arquitectura (Ed. ARQ 1999, 3ª edición 2007), El Lugar de la Arquitectura (Ed. ARQ 2002) y Material de Arquitectura (Ed. ARQ 2003). En 1999 participa del Visiting Teachers Program de la Architectural Association de Londres.
Ha recibido importantes premios; en el 1991, obtiene mención especial en el Venice Prize de la Bienal de Venecia. El 2000 fue elegido el mejor arquitecto menor de 35 años por el Colegio de Arquitectos de Chile. El 2004 fue elegido entre los Design Vanguard Architects por Architectural Record como uno de los 10 arquitectos con mayor proyección en el mundo. Ese mismo año la Universidad de Harvard realizó una gran retrospectiva sobre su obra. Fue distinguido en 2006 con la Medalla de Arquitectura por la Erich Schelling Foundation en Alemania y recientemente uno de los 5 nominados a los Global Award for Sustainable Architecture 2008 en Paris.

Recientemente, Electa (Italia) publicó una completa monografía de sus obras y proyectos titulada Alejandro Aravena, projettare e costruire.
__Ha dictado conferencias y ha sido profesor invitado en diversos lugares, entre ellos en el Colegio de Arquitectos de Cataluña, Archilab 2001 en París, el IUAV de Venezia, la America´s Society de NY, el World Bank y el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo en Washington.
__Su trabajo profesional incluye la Facultad de Matemáticas de la Universidad Católica (1er Premio de la XII Bienal de Santiago, Finalista del Premio Mies van der Rohe), la Facultad de Medicina de la UC, las Torres Siamesas de la UC, la Escuela de Arquitectura de la UC, el Colegio Huelquen Montessori, la casa de la Escultora, la casa del lago Pirehueico y el conjunto de vivienda social Quinta Monroy en Iquique (Gran Premio XV Bienal de Santiago). En este momento se encuentra construyendo las nuevas dependencias de St. Edward’s University en Austin, Texas y proyectando un edificio para talleres de arte en el Vitra Campus. Recientemente fue invitado para proyectar una villa en el proyecto Ordos 100 en Mongolia.

Has recieved important awards; in 1991, obtains special mention in the Venice Prize of the Venice Biennale. In 2000, is chosen as the best Chilean architect under 40 by the Chilean architects association. In 2004, Architectural Record chose him Design Vanguard architect as one of the 10 most promising architects in the world. That same year, Harvard University held a retrospective exhibition on his work. He was distinguished in 2006 with the Erich Schelling Architecture Medal 2006 (Germany) and recently were chosen one of the 5 nominees for the Global Awards for Sustainable Architecture 2008in Paris.

__His professional work includes the Mathematics School at UC (Mies van der Rohe Award finalist, XII Santiago Biennale 1st. Prize), the Medical School at UC, the Architecture School at UC, the Siamese Towers at UC, the Huelquen Montessori School, the sculptor’s House, the Pirehueico Lake house and the Quinta Monroy Social Housing (XV Santiago Biennale Grand Prix). Currently, is building the new facilities of St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas and designing a building for the art workshops at the Vitra Campus. Recently has been invited to design a villa in the project Ordos 100 in Mongolia.
